Our Feb. 23 class: Readings & other details

Our Feb. 23 class will be guest taught by the wonderful Alayne Armstrong, on the topic of the new BC math curriculum! Since Alayne has to get to UBC from her school in Coquitlam, class will start at 5:15 (for snack), and Alayne will be teaching the class from 5:30- 8:00 PM on Feb. 23.

Here are the three great articles Alayne has chosen. Please read them and post on your blog as usual. (The due date for the short paper has been postponed until Wed. Mar. 1 at 9 AM, and there will be no reading or blogging required for our Mar. 1 class, as per the class request.)

1) Hipkins, More complex than skills...

2) Noddings, Does everybody count?

3) Schoenfeld, Reflections on curricular change

The BCAMT  (BC Association of Mathematics Teachers) sent out the following link to the draft new secondary math curricula. I hope that you will have the chance to take a close look at it, and perhaps we as a class can work on drafting our response to some of the new material. It looks very "drafty" to me -- for example, take a look at the math history course outline, which is full of grammatical errors and ideas that need to be more fully developed! Interesting to think about the intentions and practical aspects of bringing in this new curriculum.

Looking forward to hearing how the discussion and readings go!

  1. Looking forward to seeing everyone! I wanted to let you know that I won't be able to get to campus until 5:45 pm (I've been playing with the Translink Trip Planner and, alas, that's the best I can do).
